So wait I will need to be burdened with a lower time out period because some soccer mom refuses to discipline junior while she sips on a venti iced latte from starbucks in her 2010 QX45 Urban assault vehicle??

    hillarious - rofl.

This is welcome news. I hope all purchases, not just from the app store, are completely regulated and controlled. They also should pass some regulations into what not only our kids should eat, but also us adults. What about the fashion and clothing industry. What a waste of money. Regulate that as well. We don't need fancy clothes when our money could be used instead to fund pensions and research the growth of algae in tropical coral reefs.

If they are successful at enacting all of these wonderful regulations, then we can all get lobotomies and be led around with a government helper on full benefits. Our day will come. Government is indeed good.

enjoyed that immensely. thank you for the post.

Please let this serve as public notice of my intentions to bring to market, iParent, a revolutionary new app that allows even the laziest dumb asses to be good parents. Simply type in your parental situation into the app and buy your answer via an in-app purchase.

You should have it let the users subscribe to questions and answers from other parents too so it is a recurring charge.

Parenting fail. People should learn how to use the device and check if the device has parental controls.

Truly, parents have become dependent on Uncle Sam to do the parenting work for them....

Yes "parent" is not just a noun, it is also a verb. It is something you are suppose to do when you have children. Handing a kid a device that is ready to let them buy whatever they want is irresponsible and has consequences. Both children and parents need to understand that.

My kid racked up $380 in cell downloads in one month. I didn't need my senator to step in. I took away her phone for a month, blocked her ability to purchase ANYTHING on it, and worked out the bill with my provider (AT&T) who practically wiped it all away.

As a father of three, I applaud you. You dealt with the result, taught your kid the consequences for her actions, and made sure it would not happen again. This is exactly what is suppose to happen when you have kids. You can't anticipate everything they might do, but you sure can make them understand the consequences for their actions and make changes to avoid history from repeating itself.

What a colossal waste of Taxpayer money.

How about parents get off their lazy ass and actually parent vs shoving a gadget in their kids hands to baby sit em.

    What a joke.

Again - are you suggesting a child is nothing more than a "consequence"?

A child is a consequence, as a consequence of saving someone's life I was rewarded rather generously by the person ($1,000 to a 6th grader is a lot).
A consequence is a result or effect of an action or condition

Duh! And 2nd place goes to: Original iPad...

Yes, that's the correct way to read it , NOT Motorola in 2nd place

    1) ipad 2
    2) ipad 1 for $ 220 less (hence better because of the $$$)
    3) Motorola Xoom

What they won't release is that all the tests were done by 30 and 40 somethings, not the gray panther types at CR.

they do a little but not to the extent of background processes, and having 20 push apps takes no more battery life than having 1, unless you get very frequent pushes from them of course.

Push Notifications are when your phone automatically checks for updates, alerts etc. without you having to open the app right? I guess it's just misleading to me because when I hear "push" notifications, I think of something that happens when I push the app or open it up.

    Thanks for the fast response!

Nothing new. I remember playing around with this as a science experiment in the early 80's. Dissimilar metals sandwiched together--put one end in ice, the other in hot coffee--walaah! Current sufficient to make a fan turn. Hook up the same device to a battery, and one side gets slightly colder while the other gets slightly warmer.

The obvious problem is that the system requires isolated extremes of temperature to do aything. After an hour of use, my MBP's lower case is uniformly warm. Once a thermoelectric device is at a uniform temperature, it ceases to work, if you are using it as a way to convert heat into electricity. If you power the device with electricity in order to cool a laptop CPU, then the other half of the device will be throwing out MORE heat--which the singed hairs on your upper thighs will attest to when you are using your system as a "laptop".

The only time it would work with any effectiveness would be if you took your room-temp cold MBP and, immediately after start-up, tasked a huge Photoshop render file that pounded on the CPUs. At least for a while, the temp differential would give you some electricity back.

If you have been using a computer for the last 20 years, there is no question that Word currently is the way to go, it seems to be perfected.

The future for Pages is much brighter then for Word, bit of a learning curve, but looking forward to Pages 2 (and Apple getting another $79)

I have to agree with most here that Pages didn't live up to my expectations. However, I can't agree with you that Word has been perfected. Word is complete nightmare in certain situations. Its non-intuitive and not very user friendly in many cases (especially the windows version!). I do prefer it to Pages, but its by no means the best that can be done.

Keynote on the other hand is fantastic, and considerably easier to use and prettier than Powerpoint.

Not everyone will want to install BOTH updates.

Why not? Some people may want to continue having either fan or startup issues?

What about a firmware update for the 24" iMac?

    For what?

The tea party isn't about fiscal responsibility at all as is evidenced by their "soft" targets and their emphasis on abortion, NPR and other social issues.

It's sad to see them shut down the US based on that.

No, PN is when the Apple Push Notification server tells your phone you have a notification. The apps do not need to be running. Its suppose to save you battery life by not having multiple apps open all the time.

Two new models, a "high end" and a smaller "low end" model???

Already exists. They are called the 8gb iPhone 3GS for $99, and the 32gb iPhone 4 for $299.

Next year, there will be an iPhone 4 with 8gb for $99, and the iPhone 5 will take over the $199/$299 spots with new, fantastic features. :)

How much cheaper does Apple need to make the phone to entice buyers? What can they do to make a more expensive phone for "high end" customers? Make it gold-plated, or possibly an iPhone with 24" spinner rims?

I agree with everyone else here, Shaw Wu should stop being a fake analyst and get to work at his new, more appropriate job asking me if I want fries with that.

I know some Mac haters and I know some PC haters, and I don't believe the ads are focused on either. I think the ads are focused on people like myself, PC users who know the ins and outs and pitfalls of a life with Windows and understand just how frustrating and "un-fun" they can be. While they may seem condescending from some standpoints, I see it as being closer to self-depricating humor. Everyone knows that Windows has its quirks (or bugs or flaws, depending on which camp you are in), and that's what the ads play off of. What the ads do for me is make me want to research the OS alternative to Windows, and really find out if Mac is all it's cracked up to be.

The fact that Justin Long is getting caught up in the buzz and mistakenly thought of as a Mac Nerd just shows how idiotic the tv-watching public can be. If they don't understand that these are actors, how are they ever going to understand the commercial's premise: that Macs may be just what you, the frustrated Windows user, have been looking for.

All this image shows is that the person measuring the white iPhone 4 has no idea how to use a caliper. The idea of a caliper isn't to squeeze the crap out of whatever you're measuring. It is obvious that the in the right picture they are squeezing much harder just looking at the discoloration of the persons skin on their thumb.

Wow, now we're holding the caliper wrong. Pretty soon Steve is gonna to release an "All thumbs have their weaknesses" video.

United is the ONLY airline that does this.

No they're not. I've listened to ATC transmissions on Delta and Alaska Air too... Then again, it's been a few years since I've flown anyone other than United, Southwest and Frontier and of those three, United is the only doing it.

Do y'all know the difference between a "PORTED" app and a true native app. Most applications are written on the PC , then ported on the Mac. They just recompile the app for the Mac. They don't use specific "libraries" or "classes" that takes advantages of the G4. There are certains hardware calls on the X86 platform that do take advantages of the X86 architecture. For example if anyone is running Visual Studio C++, he can download the C++ compiler from Intel that would work with visual studio and programs would run faster. I am not saying that they use "Visual studio" to make all the software, but all I am saying is that most software and games are written on the X86 platform then ported on a Mac.

The amount of stupidity in this thread is mind-blowing. Don't want people to know where you are? Don't check in. It's so simple.

By default, your friends can check you in to any location - whether you're there or not.

That's where the real privacy concern is coming from.

It's one thing if YOU put your location out to the world, but it's another thing entirely when your friends can do it (and I'm sure many would do that, quite innocently).

As for your Android is "OPEN" comment, I don't think you know what "open" actually means.
    2. Closed review process. All code reviewers work for Google, meaning that Google is the only authority that can accept or reject a code submission from the community.
That may, but at least code submissions are possible. When was the last time you heard of Apple accepting community-submitted iPhone OS code? Oh, right. Not possible. Someone still needs to oversee core code submissions, and that's how ALL software works. In this case, Google is the lead developer so they oversee those submissions.
    3. Speed of evolution. Google innovates the Android platform at a speed thats unprecedented for the mobile industry, releasing 4 major updates (1.6 to 2.1) in 18 months. OEMs wanting to build on Android have no choice but to stay close to Google so as not to lose on new features/bug fixes released.
Valid point. They have updated it pretty quickly, but it seems to be a bit slower now.
    4. Incomplete software. The public SDK is by no means sufficient to build a handset. Key building blocks missing are radio integration, international language packs, operator packs and of course Googles closed source apps like Market, Gmail and GTalk.
There are language packs available, and as a user, you can translate core apps if you need to and submit them to be added.
    5. Gated developer community. Android Market is the exclusive distribution and discovery channel for the 40,000+ apps created by developers; and is available to phone manufacturers on separate agreement.
Wrong.. Unlike the iPhone, on Android you can install any application you want from any source you want. Does the Market make things easier? Yes. Is it required for app installation and distribution? No.
